How to Write SEO Blog Articles That Actually Rank

Most blogging advice about SEO focuses on keywords. Find the right keyword, stuff it into your article, wait for Google to notice.

That's not how it works anymore.

Google in 2026 rewards articles that genuinely help people — structured clearly, written honestly, and built around what searchers actually need. Here's how to write articles that rank.

Start With Search Intent, Not Just Keywords

Before you write a single word, ask: what does someone actually want when they search this term?

Search intent falls into four categories:

Informational — "How does baby led weaning work?" The searcher wants to learn. Give them a clear, comprehensive explanation.

Navigational — "MamaHeart blog." The searcher is looking for a specific site. Not relevant for most content strategies.

Commercial — "Best baby monitors 2026." The searcher is researching before buying. Give them a comparison with honest recommendations.

Transactional — "Buy Hatch baby monitor." The searcher is ready to purchase. Send them directly to the product.

Match your article's format and content to the intent behind the keyword. An informational article for a commercial keyword won't rank — because it doesn't give searchers what they came for.

Structure Your Article for Skimmers

Most people don't read blog articles. They scan them.

Structure your content so scanners can get value without reading every word:

  • H1: your article title (include your primary keyword)
  • H2: major section headers (include secondary keywords)
  • H3: subsection headers for detailed breakdowns
  • Short paragraphs: 2-4 sentences max
  • Bullet points and numbered lists: for steps, features, and comparisons
  • Bold key phrases: help readers spot the important parts

If your article looks like a wall of text, readers leave immediately. High bounce rates signal to Google that your content isn't helpful.

The Article Structure That Works

Every high-performing blog article follows a similar structure:

  1. Hook (first 100 words) — address the problem your reader has. Make them feel understood. Promise a solution.
  2. The Problem — expand on why this is difficult or confusing. Build empathy and credibility.
  3. The Solution — your main content. Step-by-step instructions, explanations, or recommendations.
  4. Supporting Details — examples, data, case studies, comparisons.
  5. Call to Action — what should the reader do next?

Keyword Placement That Actually Matters

You don't need to mention your keyword 20 times. You need to mention it in the right places:

  • Title (H1): include your primary keyword naturally
  • First paragraph: mention the keyword within the first 100 words
  • At least one H2: use a variation of your keyword in a section header
  • Meta description: write a compelling 150-character summary including the keyword
  • URL slug: keep it short and keyword-focused
  • Image alt text: describe images using relevant keywords

That's it. Google is smart enough to understand context — you don't need to force the keyword into every paragraph.

Internal Linking: The Underrated SEO Signal

Every article you publish should link to at least 2-3 other articles on your site.

Internal links do two things: help Google understand the structure and relationships between your content, and keep readers on your site longer, exploring related topics.

When you write about Pinterest automation, link to your article about the Pinterest API. When you write about Amazon Affiliate, link to your article about content systems.

Build a web of connected content, not a collection of isolated posts.

Article Length: How Long Is Long Enough?

The honest answer: as long as it needs to be to fully answer the searcher's question.

  • Informational articles: 1,000-2,000 words
  • How-to guides: 1,500-3,000 words
  • Comparison articles: 1,000-2,500 words
  • Listicles: 800-2,000 words

Don't pad articles with filler content to hit a word count. Google can tell the difference between genuine depth and artificial length.

What Makes an Article Actually Rank

Beyond keywords and structure, Google rewards:

  • Original insights — your experience, your data, your perspective
  • Accuracy — especially for health, finance, and technical topics
  • User experience — fast loading, mobile-friendly, easy to read
  • Backlinks — other sites linking to your article
  • Freshness — updated articles outperform stale ones
